Op het net zijn er heel wat manieren om een video van bv. YouTube te downloaden. Je downloadt dan vaak een .flv (Flash video)-bestand en dat kan je niet rechtstreeks importeren in iMovie om het te bewerken. Je moet het dus converteren. Op het net kan je heel wat conversiesoftware kopen, maar alle goeie zijn ofwel betalend ofwel zetten ze een watermerk op je film of leggen ze beperking op.
Er is één uitzondering op die regel: HandBrake. Dit programma is OpenSource (lees: gratis) en steengoed!
Je kan met dit programma je videobestand omzetten naar heel wat instellingen waaronder: Apple Universal (voor iMovie, FC, QuickTime, …), iOS, …
Het werkt als volgt:
- Open het te converteren bestand in HandBrake. (HandBrake noemt dit de ‘source’)
- Kies de ‘Destination’. Hier zal je geconverteerde bestand opgeslagen worden.
- Kies de ‘Output settings’. Je kan één van de vooraf geprogrammeerde instellingen kiezen uit het de ‘Presets’-zijbalk rechts. Zie je deze niet? Klik dan eerst op ‘Toggle presets’. Voor iMovie of andere software kies je best voor Apple Universal.
- Klik op ‘Start’ en zie hoe de magie zich ontrolt!

Workflow:

- Choose the ‘Destination’ where you want the file to be saved. You can give the file a custom name.
- Choose the ‘Output settings’. You can choose one of the presets on the right. If you can’t see these, hit ‘Toggle presets’. For iMovie and other applications, choose Apple Universal.
- Hit ‘Start’ and watch the magic unfold!
