Stopmotion? Wadisda??

Nochtans is dit een filmtechniek die iedereen kent. Denk maar aan Pingu, Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride, deze schitterende videoclip, deze kunstprojecten…
Het zijn allemaal beeldfragmenten die beeld voor beeld opgenomen worden. In bijvoorbeeld een normaal bioscoopbeeld zitten  (meestel) 24 beelden per seconde. Voor elke seconde beeld heb je dus 24 foto’s nodig.

Op de Mac kan je deze filmtechniek heel makkelijk toepassen met behulp van het programma iStopmotion. Hier kan je een camera (webcam of ondersteunde fotocamera’s) aansluiten en gebruikmaken van onion skin. Deze techniek laat toe om steeds het vorige beeld nog te laten zien. Zo kan je heel precies de gewenste beweging fotograferen.

Dit is een voorbeeld dat ik zelf maakte in mijn keuken m.b.v. iStopmotion. De titels werden toegevoegd in iMovie.

In de klas kan je iStopmotion gebruiken om je leerlingen op een leuke en vooral doordachte manier filmpjes te laten maken. Stopmotion is een techniek waarbij je veel beter dan bij gewoon filmen vooraf moet nadenken wat je gaat doen en hoe je dit gaat doen omdat het een traag proces is. Welk materiaal kan je zoal gebruiken? Klei of play-doh (dan heet het ‘claymation’), Lego, Playmobil, ander speelgoed, zelf geknutselde dingen, …

Na het filmen kan je Stopmotion probleemloos naar iMovie gestuurd worden om het daar verder te bewerken.

They’re all clips composed out of still images. For example: in a theatre movie, there are (most of the time) 24 frames each second. That means that you have to take 24 photographs to create one second of stopmotion film.

On the Mac, you can use this way of filming very easy with iStopmotion. You can use a camera (webcam or supported cameras) and apply onion skin. Now you will always see an overlay with the previous image. This helps you monitor the movement of your figures.

This is an example I made myself in my kitchen. Titles were added with iMovie.

In class, students can use iStopmotion to create video clips in a way that encourages them to plan and overthink their work more than with conventional filming. Every step in the filming process takes longer, so they need to learn to use their time useful.What materials can they use? After recording, the clip can be send to iMovie for further editing.
